Orthodontists specialize in fixing crooked teeth, overbites and underbites, and other tooth placement issues. Orthodontists provide treatment options that help move your teeth into the proper position. Before diving into these options, let's review some additional information about tooth positioning.

Will the Problem Correct Itself?
If your teeth are crooked, you may wonder if the problem will correct itself. While it is not completely out of the question that a single tooth may shift into place, it is rare. A couple of factors will affect whether a tooth will “turn.” For example, in a child that has yet to get all their molars in, there is a slight chance that a tooth will turn into the proper position.

In most cases, if a tooth is crooked, it will need to be treated to get it to move into the proper position. According to the American Association of Orthodontics, braces are the right solution. Braces can be tooth-colored, metal, or clear aligners.

Here are the two most common solutions for repairing crooked teeth.

1. Traditional Braces
Traditional braces include metal braces and clear braces. All traditional braces, regardless of appearance, have a few things in common. They have brackets that attach to the teeth and wires that run through the brackets to help gently move the teeth into position. Traditional braces may also have chains or rubber bands to help achieve the final result.

On average, you can expect to wear braces for about two years. You will also need to use a retainer at night following treatment to ensure that the teeth don't slip back into their prior position.

2. Clear Tray Aligners
Clear tray aligners can deliver the same results as braces without the brackets and wires. Clear tray aligners are custom-made to fit your specific treatment needs. They can be removed to eat and drink, and you can expect to wear clear aligners for two years. Many adult and teen patients often prefer clear aligners because they're less noticeable.
