Mehreen Merchant, DMD
Dr. Mehreen Merchant is originally from Johannesburg, South Africa, where she was raised and spent most of her childhood years. Her upbringing and time there gave her a sense of appreciation for different cultures and inspired a desire to make an impact on other people’s lives. Dr. Mehreen and her family subsequently moved to New Jersey, where she finished high school. She then completed her undergraduate studies at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and a certificate in Entrepreneurship and Management.
Thereafter, she moved to Philadelphia, PA to attend dental school at the University of Pennsylvania, where she was awarded a scholarship to obtain a dual degree. In just four years, she completed both a Doctorate of Dental Medicine and a Masters in Bioengineering. While in dental school, Dr. Mehreen was selected to treat complex cases in the school’s Advanced Dental Care Clinic. She also volunteered to organize a clinic that provided free dental health education and services to uninsured patients in the local community. For her efforts, she was awarded honors in both clinical dentistry and in community service.
Upon graduation, Dr. Mehreen matriculated into the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Pennsylvania where she earned a certificate in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. During her specialty training, Dr. Mehreen was active in orthodontic research and teaching. As a resident, she was selected to lead a continuing education course on temporomandibular joint disorders, which was attended by both her peers and specialists across multiple departments at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Mehreen is an active member of the American Association of Orthodontics, Middle Atlantic Society of Orthodontics, American Dental Association, and the New Jersey Dental Association. She is also a board eligible member of the American Board of Orthodontics. In her free time, Dr. Mehreen enjoys traveling and spending time with her family and friends.
